Strategy for Finding the Right Accounting Software

.

In the September 2003 issue of the Journal of Accountancy Randy Johnston of K2 Enterprises wrote an insightful article on how to select the right software. Since almost all organizations have some sort of accounting software in place, Randy provides several suggestions that help you go beyond features and functions in making the best choice.

For example, when selecting software, don't just look for features that you need, "it should incorporate features that streamline the operation of your business and it should be easy enough to customize to your unique business needs so you don't have to take on more manual accounting operations to compensate for the software's limitations."

The article also includes a table of definitions on size of the organization and what type of software you should be looking for. Although the article is somewhat dated now, it talks how Sage (formerly Best) Software has Peachtree, BusinessWorks 50, MAS 90, MAS 200 and MAS 500 which meet the needs of different-sized organizations. Using a process like the one in this article can help you make a choice you won't regret.

What Do Customers Want from ASP?

.

http://www.i-bn.net/images/CONNECT.JPGSummit Strategies Senior Analyst Amy Levy reports on in-depth interviews with several large organizations that currently use ASP services to find out what they want and expect from their ASP. This report is based upon interviews from 2002 that were updated in 2003 and is insightful for customers large and small alike.

We like the article because it points out the things we have been doing since 1999. We provide a variety of implementation and ownership options as well as the ultimate choice of who supports the end application. Customers want a single point of accountability even if we utilize third party resellers and specialists to support the individual applications. Even though many of our customers utilize local resellers, they know we understand the applications we support and how they run in our technical environment.

Let us show you why outsourcing and ASP services provide a great ROI for customers from 2 to 2000 users!

Darren Root: Accounting and Technology Integrator

.

Accounting Software 411 recently published an interview with Darren Root, a well known consultant to CPA firms on technology. Darren provides practical advice for CPAs looking to improve their firm's efficiency.

In the article he points out how outsourcing to ASPs can help alleviate some of the routine IT services that are not core to a CPAs practice. Focusing on core competencies are key to the success of any business and what started the outsourcing industry decades ago. People have outsourced payroll, tax services, collections and a variety of other functions that can be performed more efficiently by experts in those fields.

At I-BN we provide hosting for ERP systems as well as those components that integrate with an ERP system. In 2009 I-BN is adding more services to round out our offerings. These services are either enabled by our new Virtual Server infrastructure or through our network of Solution Providers.

Are ASP Services Right for Me or My Clients?

http://www.i-bn.net/images/asp.gif

Application Service Providers (ASP) burst onto the seen in the late 90's. Some like Bill Gates of Microsoft and Scott McNeally of Sun preached that 90% of all software would be offered as a service instead of sold as a package. Simply stated, an ASP provides access to an application over the Internet from a secure data center. Regardless of the technology used, or whether the customer buys or rents the application, the ASP provides a technology outsourcing service that should result in economies of scale.

Many of these pundits and early ASPs are no longer around, but ASP services are going strong today, just as they have been under a variety of names over the past 20 years! ADP has provided a version of its payroll service in an ASP model since the 1980's and "timeshare" services have been around since computers have existed.

What makes today's ASP different from mainframe timeshare or other similar service providers of the past? Simply put, technology. Today's ASPs use the internet, web services, RDP protocol, and other new alphabet soup phrases like .NET.

So, what does this mean for me you ask? It really depends upon the nature of your business. Our White Paper puts the answer to this question in plain English for end users and consultants alike. The research was done several years ago, but rings true today and simply answers the question "Are ASP Services Right for Me or My Clients?"

ASP services may not be for everyone, but if they are right for you, don't miss out on the savings.
